Battle of Brisket applications available. Mission will hold its 12th annual Battle of the Brisket State Championship on September 16 and 17 in the parking lot of the Sylvester Powell Community Center. Applications for teams who wish to compete this year are now available by calling Kathy Lockhard at 913-722-8206.

Northeast Johnson County high schoolers honored as among best track and field athletes in KC metro. A number of northeast Johnson County athletes have been recognized among the Star’s All-Metro Teams for track and field. They are: SM East’s Parker Shirling for javelin; SM North’s 3200 meter relay team of Belesti Akalu, Carter Jacobson, Adam Dujakovick and Noah Stevenson; Akalu for the 3200 meters; SM North’s Jazmin Williams for long jump; and SM East’s Jessie Stindt for triple jump.

Candidate forum scheduled. Candidates for the Kansas House District 21 election have been invited to a candidate forum at 4 p.m. Monday. The forum will be held at the Overland Park Chamber Black & Vetch Education Center, 9001 W. 110th St., Suite 150.

Merriam Truck Tuesday today. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Merriam Marketplace today, four food trucks will be serving lunch for the Truck Tuesday at the Merriam Marketplace.

Fire department open house. Consolidated Fire District No. 2 will hold an open house at Fire Station 23, 9011 Roe Ave. in Prairie Village from 9 a.m. to noon July 30.

Leawood accident leaves woman dead. A Sunday morning accident at 119th St. and State Line Road in Leawood left one person dead. The accident happened about 9 a.m. when an east bout car was struck by a southbound pickup truck. A 69-year-old woman who died was a passenger in the car driven by her husband.
