Eleven Shawnee Mission schools — including Briarwood Elementary, Crestview Elementary, Trailwood Elementary, SM East and SM North – will receive a combined $43,462 from the Kansas Department of Health and Environment to fund a number of environmental initiatives.

Trailwood, SM East and SM North will receive money to fund recycling and composting programs as well as environmental education activities. Briarwood and Crestview are part of a program that will allow InterUrban ArtHouse to deliver environmental arts education to students.

Briarwood has been among the district’s leaders in environmental stewardship programs, receiving an award for launching a composting program back in 2012 and taking part in a composting and recycling program this past semester.
