A 29,000 square foot Planet Fitness – the largest in the Kansas City area – is scheduled to open this fall in the former Mission Hobby Lobby building.

A floor plan for the new Planet Fitness has been filed with the City of Mission that shows a layout for a large number of exercise machines.

A spokesperson for Planet Fitness said the Mission location would have the same membership pricing and program availability as its other locations in the market.

The Hobby Lobby along Shawnee Mission Parkway was converted to a Planet Fitness location several months ago. At the time, that sparked rumors that the Mission Hobby Lobby also would become a Planet Fitness, but the property manager would not confirm that transaction. Hobby Lobby closed both its Mission location and the Shawnee store when it opened a new a new store next to IKEA in Merriam.

The Mission location is between Johnson Drive and Martway just north of the Hy-Vee grocery. It is about a block from the Sylvester Powell Community Center, which also offers full workout facilities. Hobby Lobby left the building in 2015. Part of the space was taken by a move of Dollar Tree from Roeland Park.

The Planet Fitness in Shawnee offers memberships starting at $10 per month and is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week with some holiday exceptions.
