The Shawnee Mission board of education on Monday approved the hiring of Kent Glaser as the new athletic director for SM North for the 2016-17 school year. Glaser will replace David Ewers, who will stay on as an associate principal at the school.

Initially, SMSD had announced the current district athletic director Matt Johnson would be taking the role as school AD at his alma mater. But Johnson ended up accepting a position as the AD at Olathe South, leaving the SM North job open.

Glaser is a veteran in the role, having served as an associate principal and athletic/activities director at Gardner Edgerton High School from 2004 to 2015. He was also an assistant principal at Derby High School from 2001 to 2004. Glaser started his career as a math teacher and coach at Shawnee Heights High School in Tecumseh, Kan.

Glaser, who met with SM North coaches and faculty Tuesday, has a bachelor’s degree in secondary math from K-State and a master’s in education from Washburn.
