Erin Thompson was elected Roeland Park City Council President Monday night in a split vote that relied on Mayor Joel Marquardt to break the tie.

Thompson was elected to the council in April 2015. She will replace Becky Fast as council president.

Councilor Sheri McNeil first nominated Tim Janssen for the position. Janssen also was elected to his first term in April 2015. Michael Poppa nominated Thompson and the council split 4-4 in the ensuing vote.

Thompson was backed by Poppa, Fast and Teresa Kelly. Janssen was backed by McNeil, Ryan Kellerman and Michael Rhoades.

Marquardt broke the deadlock by voting for Thompson. The two candidates for council president did not give the five-minute speeches that are allowed according to the city procedure on picking a new president.

Last year Fast outlined her hope to have more productive meetings and a desire to end a culture of mistrust on the council.
