Spotted in Prairie Village: A downy woodpecker

Tufted_Woodpecker

We had a very busy li’l downy woodpecker hunting on the oak tree in our front yard Saturday. You can tell males from females in this species by the red mark on the back of their heads (males have it; females don’t). These lively little woodpeckers appear to be about as common in our neighborhood as the noisy northern flickers that bang their heads against the flashing on the chimney each year.

As always, if you’ve got a cool wildlife photo that you’d like to share with our readers, send it our way!
