This year’s SM East baseball team has its sights set squarely on breaking through to bring the Lancers’ third state baseball title to the school. But the accolades for this year’s fearsome roster are already starting to roll in.

Senior Joey Wentz, who is projected to be taken fairly high in the first round of this summer’s Major League Baseball draft, repeated as All-Sunflower Player of the Year. Wentz was also named to the league’s First Team All Sunflower list with teammates Zebulon Vermillion and Jake Randa.

Pitcher and slugger Luke Anderson made Second Team All Sunflower alongside catcher Henry Churchill. And Trevor Thompson, Jonah Watt and Cameron Fritz all made the Honorable Mention list.

Weather permitting, SM East is scheduled to open regionals play against SM South at 4 p.m. today on Field 1 of the 3&2 complex in Lenexa. SM East faced the Raiders in two of their final three games, walking away with two wins to finish the regular season. The Lancers would face the winner of SM West and Blue Valley West tonight at 6 p.m. should they make it past the Raiders.

Coach Jerrod Ryherd said last week that Wentz and Vermillion will likely start today’s games.
