15th annual Village Crawfish Festival set for May 14. A spring tradition in northeast Johnson County returns next month for its 15th year. The annual Village Crawfish Festival will be held 6-11 p.m. Saturday, May 14, at St. Pius X Church, 5500 Woodson in Mission. This year’s festival will benefit reStart, a local non-profit organization that works to empower the homeless. You can find more information, including how to purchase tickets, here.

Internationally recognized expert on human trafficking to address 2016 Episcopal Women’s Summit at St. Michael and All Angels. One of the world’s foremost experts on aiding survivors of human trafficking will be in northeast Johnson County this weekend as part of the 2016 Women’s Summit for the Episcopal Diocese of Kansas, which will be held at St. Michael and All Angels Church in Mission. Reverend Becca Stevens will be the keynote speaker Friday at 7 p.m. She is the founder of Thistle Farms, a community of survivors that provides a two-year residential program. Mission police plan coffee for Friday. The Mission Police Department will hold its next Coffee with a Cop this Friday, April 22, at Twisted Sisters Coffee Shop on Johnson Drive. You can join Mission police officers for coffee, donuts and informal conversation starting at 8 a.m. It is an opportunity to ask questions, voice concerns and get to know the officers.

Westwood garage sale this month. Westwood residents who are interested in participating in the Spring Community Garage Sale, which will be held April 30, can register online. The city will be advertising this event online. A listing of participants will be posted on the city’s website and can also be picked up at city hall.

SM North student participates in Topeka protest against transgender restroom restriction bill. SM North student Jacob Moyer was among the young Johnson Countians who traveled to the state capital last week to protest proposed legislation in the House and Senate that would restrict transgender students from using certain restrooms. “There’s still a lot of hate in the state of Kansas,” Moyer told the KU Statehouse News Service.
