Todd William Calwell was born to Mike and Linda Calwell of Prairie Village, KS on June 22, 1970 and died April 12, 2016 in his home in Kansas City. He graduated from Shawnee Mission East High School in 1989 where he was on the swim team and played basketball. During high school and college, he worked at the Dragon Inn, where he took the opportunity to practice speaking Chinese and absorb the Asian culture he so much admired. He completed his BA in East Asian Languages and Cultures from Kansas University in 1993 and was proficient in Mandarin, Cantonese, Spanish, Japanese and French. He started Karate training at age 8 and competed regularly in tournaments, eventually achieving black belt status. Todd expanded his martial arts training into Judo and Muay Thai achieving the rank of black belt in Judo. After college he worked for the Marley Company as a buyer, support executive to China. He loved traveling to China and enjoyed the culture. He later moved to Houston where he set up a computer business catering to university students. He signed on with the University of Houston as a Mixed Martial Arts Instructor and started an interscholastic club to compete with other schools.
His favorite pastime was to spend hours playing cribbage or fishing with his revered grandfather, William (Bill) Calwell, in Topeka KS. Todd’s greatest love was his many friends from early school days. He would never pass up an opportunity to enjoy their company and entertain with his escapades and stories. This was one of his gifts. These memories will remain with us as long as the many stories continue to be passed on by his family and friends. Todd was an especially good guy and was liked by everybody.
