SM East baseball standout Joey Wentz got some metro-wide exposure last week as Time Warner Cable Sports Channel named him its Hy-Vee Athlete of the Week.
With a perfect pitching record so far — including an outing where he struck out 16 Blue Valley Northwest batters over seven innings — and a batting average over .400, Wentz is looking to take the Lancers to the promised land of the 6A state title for the first time since 1995.
“We expect to win a state championship, and are pretty confident it’s going to happen,” Wentz told Time Warner Sports Channel’s Katie Falco.
Coach Jarrod Ryherd said Wentz’s combination of natural talent and work ethic made him a special player.
“I probably won’t coach another guy as talented as him for as long as I coach,” said Ryherd.
