The Shawnee Mission School District this week approved the hiring of Lee’s Summit West veteran athletic director Debbie Katzfey to join the SM East staff next school year.
Katzfey will take over the athletic director role for the Lancers from Kelli Kurle, who announced her resignation from the position early this year. Kurle has been at SM East for nine years and the school’s athletic director for the past three.
Katzfey has been Lee’s Summit West’s only athletic director since the building opened in 2004. The Titans quickly became a sports powerhouse in Missouri, having won 25 state titles over the course of the school’s 12 years. Lee’s Summit West also boasts two major league baseball draftees, including Cardinals relief pitcher Trevor Rosenthal.
Katzfey has spent 26 years with the Lee’s Summit district, and qualified for retirement this year.
She’ll officially assume her new position with Shawnee Mission July 17.
