Safe to say it’s been a pretty good month for SM North’s Weathers brothers.
Last week, the seniors led the Indians back into the state 6A boys basketball tournament and emerged with SM North’s first-ever title. The on Monday, Michael and Marcus told a group of SM North community supporters gathered in the school library that they had both verbally committed to play college ball at Miami University of Ohio, a D1 program that boasts NBA All-Star Wally Szczerbiak among its alumni.
The Weathers brothers had been looking for an opportunity to stick together at the college level, but that goal proved challenging given their different roles. Rivals had Michael pegged as a three-star guard prospect while Marcus was projected to be a small forward at the college level. The brothers had been scouted by a number of programs, including UMKC, Missouri State, Creighton, Southern Mississippi and South Dakota State through their senior year. But the opportunity not only to stay together, but also to have a shot at real playing time soon proved the deciding factor for Miami.
“We made our decision after a meeting with the coach and we loved the plan mapped out for us and how dedicated they were to us,” said Marcus. “They are losing seven seniors next year, so this would be the perfect opportunity.”
Michael said the duo will be “focusing on school and graduating” over the next couple of months, and then hitting the gym hard over the summer to prepare for the transition to the college level.
