SM North’s boys basketball team wrapped up a perfect 11-0 Sunflower League schedule on Friday with a 60-40 win over district rival SM Northwest, giving Indians fans plenty to crow about as the team gets ready to kick off a bid for a return trip to state.
Led by senior twin brothers Marcus and Michael Weathers, SM North put together a 16-4 record on the year. Two of those four losses came in early-season tournament play, when the Indians fell to Vianney (out of Kirkwood, Mo.) and Barstow during the Championship Showdown in December. Since then, they’ve dropped just two games, losing 80-76 to Lee’s Summit in mid-January and to Nixa on the road at the end of last month.
But the Indians have been on a roll since, notching eight easy victories in a row. Perhaps their most impressive came on the road against top-ranked Lawrence on Feb. 16, when the Indians took a 71-62 win over the Lions.
SM North tops its four-team sub-state group as the two seed in the SM South region. (Lawrence, at 18-2, is the one seed). It will face SM East in opening-round play on Thursday. The winner of that game will face the winner of SM South and Olathe Northwest on Saturday.
