Lancer Dancers show well in Orlando. SM East’s dance team proved that it was still among the best in the nation this weekend with strong performances in both the hip hop and jazz divisions at NDA Nationals in Orlando. The Lancer Dancers took fifth in the large varsity class for jazz and ninth for hip hop.

SM North, SM East to face each other in opening round of substate boys basketball. Northeast Johnson County’s two public high schools will square off in the first round of boys basketball substate play this Thursday. SM North, 16-4, is the two seed in the SM South region, and will face the seven seed, SM East, 7-13, at the Brick House. Tip is 7 p.m. On the girls side, SM East, the seven seed at 4-16, will face Lawrence, the two seed, at Lawrence at 7 p.m. Wednesday. SM North, the four seed at 8-12, faces five seed Olathe Northwest at SM North at 7 p.m. Wednesday.

Free self-defense class in Mission. The Mission Police Department will be offering a self-defense class Wednesday, March 2 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Sylvester Powell, Jr. Community Center. The class is free but space is limited, so please respond to Emily Randel at erandel@missionks.org or 913-676-8368. The class is for ages 15 and up. Please come wearing comfortable clothing and running/tennis shoes.

SM North bowler in state. Jessica Nevins qualified for the state tournament as the girls’ team placed sixth in the regional bowling tournament The boys’ team placed ninth. The state high school bowling tournament takes place this week.
