Kent Mathews, born March 4, 1946 in Kansas City, Mo., passed away February 6, 2016 in Overland Park, Kan. He died one month shy of his 70th birthday. He had fought a courageous battle against juvenile onset Diabetes for almost 60 years.
Kent spent 22 years with The Lee Co., Merriam, Kansas and left as Assistant Vice-President of Manufacturing. He subsequently held positions with: Jack Winter (women’s clothing), Grafton, Wisconsin; Kellwood (outdoor equipment), St. Louis, Missouri; and Employers Reinsurance Corporation, Overland Park, Kansas.
Kent enjoyed time spent with his wife, sons and daughters-in-law and his grandchildren. He also enjoyed soccer, outdoor sports, nature and had a love of reptiles, which he shared with his sons and grandsons. Kent had a unique charm and an innate ability to place others before self. He was a graduate of North Kansas City High School and Ottawa University. He will be deeply missed by his family and many friends in Wisconsin, St. Louis and the Kansas City area.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jo and O.K. Mathews, two brothers, Charlie and Earl, and nephew Andrew. He is survived by: his wife of 50 years, Judy Storey Mathews; sons Scott (Sarah) Mathews and Mark (Penny) Mathews; brother, Bruce (Melanie) Mathews; grandchildren Parker, Duncan and George (Scott & Sarah) and Logan and Alix (Mark & Penny). He is also survived by three nieces and nine nephews.
A celebration of Kent’s life will be held on Saturday, February 13, 3:30 -5:30 pm, at Mission Hills Country Club, 5400 Mission Drive, Prairie Village, KS. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Kansas City Hospice.
