It was a good weekend for an SM East girls basketball team that had been waiting a year for the ice to break.

The Lancers broke the longest losing streak in program history on Friday with a 67-59 win over Sumner Academy at the Firebird Winter Classic in Lawrence. That win gave them a welcome momentum that helped the Lancers beat Great Bend in a Saturday morning game 76-68.

The back-to-back wins snapped a 26-game losing streak that extended back to the fifth game of the 2014-15 season, when the Lancers beat SM North. They finished last year 1-20. With this weekend’s wins, they are now 2-10 for the 2015-16 season.

SM East and first-year head coach Lauren Lawrence will look to keep adding to the win column tomorrow when they face district rival SM West at home. The Lancers have eight Sunflower League games to close out the regular season before sub-state play begins.
