Mack Hardware, long a fixture on Mission’s Johnson Drive is undertaking a major expansion. The hardware store is expanding into the building next door to the west, incorporating that space into its present store.

Kelly Mack, the third generation to operate Mack Hardware, said the family has owned the adjacent building for the last four or five years. “(The expansion) will let us serve the community better,” Mack said. “We think this area needs a larger home store.”

Mack Hardware has a 77-year history in Mission. It was first opened by Kelly Mack’s grandfather, who had been in the lumber business, in 1939 and moved to its current Johnson Drive location in 1947.

The expansion will give the store one-third more space and the ability to double its product selection, Mack said. Pet supplies, grills, patio furniture and auto products will be some of the expanded lines. The store will undergo a complete remodel in both sides, which will be opened up as one interior space. Mack hopes to have it complete by mid to late May. Mack is trying to get ready for the remodel with a clearance sale.

The new building was built for the gas company, Mack said, and later was a Maytag store. He said the expansion is a step he has wanted to undertake for quite a while.
