A Shawnee man is in jail after plowing into the intersection of 75th Street and Metcalf Avenue Sunday night in an effort to evade a Prairie Village police officer, causing fatal injuries to a woman who was 39 weeks pregnant.

Physicians were able to deliver Kansas City, Kan., resident Denisse Lopez’s baby, but Lopez, 25, died shortly after the delivery from injuries sustained in the crash.

Raphael Sherman was traveling west on 75th Street near Lamar Avenue arond 7 p.m. Sunday when a Prairie Village police officer attempted to pull him over. Sherman signaled that he was prepared to pull over, and then abruptly accelerated away from the police vehicle toward the intersection with Metcalf. Information from the Overland Park Police Department indicated Sherman entered the intersection when the light was red, hitting the Chevy truck that was carrying Lopez and another person. The truck then skidded through the intersection and hit a minivan with five people in it.

A total of six people were taken to the hospital. The injuries suffered by all but Lopez were not life threatening.

Sherman, 21, is being held at the Johnson County Detention Center in Olathe on charges of involuntary manslaughter and aggravated battery. He has a preliminary court appearance set for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. No bond has been set.
