The Roeland Park citizens group that has been raising money for improvements to R Park will be back at it in 2016 with three events that will be raise funds for a drinking fountain in the park.
Back for a second year will be the “Treasure in Arrr Park,” which was a pirate-themed event for children. It is planned for June 4 from 10 a.m. to noon. The free event will have pirate activities for the kids. The fundraising comes through the sale of $5 picnic lunches and the rental of booth space to businesses.
The pirate day will be held on the same day as the All City Block party, which will be an afternoon event in R Park.
The second fundraiser will be a soccer clinic for children ages 2 to 11. The clinic tentatively will be held in R Park from 10 a.m. to noon on June 18. It will be run by i9Sports of Johnson County. The cost will be $15 per child in advance or $20 at the event. The exact date depends on the schedules of professional soccer players who are being invited to participate. The fundraising committee will get $11 of the pre-registration and $16 of the event day registrations.
The final fundraiser will be “Chili, Brews and Country Music, too!” planned for Oct. 15 at the Roeland Park Community Center. It will run from 6 to 9 p.m. A $15 ticket ($8 for children 3 to 10) will yield a choice of chili with toppings and water, soda or a local craft beer. Country music will be by Roeland Park resident Scotty Lane.
Gretchen Davis, who presented the event schedule to the city council for its consent, said all of the events have been coordinated with and approved by the city’s events committee and parks committee.
In 2014, the group held a Bacon, Blues and Brews event to raise money for the park’s walking trail. Earlier this year it held a BBQ & Bluegrass event to raise money for benches and other amenities in the park.
