Spotted in NEJC: Big, beautiful birds of prey

People aren’t the only ones enjoying the unseasonably mild weather this holiday season. Readers have been spotting some big ol’ birds of prey enjoying the outdoors as well. Reader Alan Lehman snapped a photo of what he believes to be a juvenile Cooper’s Hawk that was perched in his Prairie Village backyard Sunday afternoon:

And reader Rachel Cannon reports an “an active night and day for winged wildlife around 63rd Ter. and Roe. Last night at midnight, I had a pair of what I assume are Great Horned Owls duet in my backyard. Today I had this lovely guy looking for some food.” Cannon believes this bird to be a Red Tailed Hawk:
