The sweet swing of SM East senior Joey Wentz has landed him on one of baseball’s most well respected lists of top prospects.
Wentz, who is headed to play for the NCAA champion University of Virginia Cavaliers next year, is number 58 on Baseball America’s High School Top 100 list. A 6’5″, 209 lb. lefty, Wentz is a top prospect at first base, and earned the right this summer to take part in the Junior Home Run Derby ahead of this summer’s MLB All-Star Game in Cincinnati.
Wentz isn’t the only KC-area player to make the list. St. Thomas Aquinas pitcher Riley Pint, who as a high school senior is already throwing a fastball that tops out near 100 miles per hour, is number two on the Baseball America list. Rockhurst High School pitcher Tyler Benninghoff, a University of Arkansas commit, comes in at number 45.
Wentz helped power the Lancers to consecutive state tournament appearances his sophomore and junior years.
