If you’ve played any tennis in northeast Johnson County over the past 50 years or so, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve come across Bill Guilfoil.
The Fairway resident has been teaching tennis (and ping-pong) in the area for decades. And this past weekend, the Overland Park Racquet Club announced an honor recognizing his contributions to the sport in the area. Guilfoil will have one of the new outdoor courts at the club named after him when it opens this summer.
Guilfoil has been teaching at OPRC since it opened in 1978. At 93, he still supervises group tennis classes at the club, and oversees OPRC’s Sunday table tennis gatherings.
In 2012, Guilfoil competed in the Olympic trials for table tennis — making him the oldest competitor in an Olympic trial in U.S. history.
