SM North on Thursday will play host to the annual early-season public vs. private basketball tournament that got its start at SM East four years ago.
Now dubbed the Championship Showdown, the tournament pits some of the Kansas City area’s best programs — as well as a talented out-of-town squad — against each other. SM East head coach Shawn Hair conceived of the idea back in 2012 as the ARC Madness tournament, which featured both his alma mater, Rockhurst, and his current team. Both the Lancers and the Hawklets have been annual fixtures in the event along with SM North, which hosted for the first time back in 2013.
Sponsored by The University of Kansas Hospital, this year’s tournament features SM East, SM North, SM West and Olathe East on the public half of the bracket with Rockhurst, Barstow, St. James Academy and St. John Vianney (out of St. Louis) on the private half.
The action starts Thursday with semi-final play on Friday and the championship game on Saturday. SM North faces St. James at 7 p.m. in the opening round, with SM East taking on St. John Vianney at 8:30 p.m. Check out the full bracket below:
