The old Hobby Lobby building in Mission is on its way to transforming into a new life. Remodeling is now under way in the building for a new Dollar Tree store and a fitness center could be in the future.
The building is posted as having 51,000 square feet. In late summer, Dollar Tree filed building plans with the city for a portion of the building. It is expected to occupy about 12,000 square feet. The Hobby Lobby that had occupied the site, part of the Mission West shopping center, moved to a new store in Merriam in April. It opened a new 55,000 square foot store near IKEA.
A leasing agent for the Mission building said negotiations are in progress with a fitness center for a portion of the Hobby Lobby store, but that they have not been finalized.
An application for a Community Improvement District (CID) was filed for the Mission West center in 2013 but it failed when the city council voted against holding a public hearing for the plan. A CID would have created a higher sales tax to fund improvements on the property.
