Police arrest man in Prairie Village dumpster after pursuit that started in Independence

A chase that started in Independence, Mo., after a man rammed his car into a police vehicle ended in Prairie Village Saturday evening.

Police were investigating a shoplifting report in Independence when the man, who had a female passenger in the car with him, hit the police car and drove from the scene at around 6:15 p.m. Officers pursued the car through Independence and Kansas City, Mo., before he ditched the vehicle and fled on foot in the 7600 block of Juniper in Prairie Village. The female passenger was immediately taken into custody after the man left the vehicle.

Officers initially lost track of the suspect after he left the scene of the abandoned car, and a number of Prairie Village residents reported that a search helicopter was hovering over the city. A Prairie Village resident called the police and informed them that the suspect was hiding in a trash dumpster, where the police located him at 75th Street and Rosewood Circle.

The man was booked in Johnson County Jail on Saturday night. The woman was released at the scene.
