Santa, Sluggerrr and SM East band to add to holiday spirit in Prairie Village Thursday

The big new tree will sit at the southwest corner of Corinth Square through the first of the year.

Thursday marks a big day for holiday festivities in Prairie Village.

Now in its 30th year, the Mayor’s Holiday Tree Lighting at Corinth Square Thursday will feature a special new face in 2015. Sluggerrr, the mascot of the 2015 World Series Champion Kansas City Royals, will be helping Santa Claus and Mayor Laura Wassmer flip the switch on the lights.

The Corinth Square event will also feature performances by the Kansas City Christian school choir and dancers from Dancerz Unlimited. The Dickens Carolers will be on hand as well. The forecast calls for chilly air but clear skies, with temperatures hovering around freezing as the festivities commence at 6 p.m.

A number of merchants at Corinth Square and the Village Shops will be holding open houses Thursday as part of the celebrations. At the Village Shops, for example, French Market will have the Made in France Band on hand to provide a soundtrack fit for francophiles for its open house from 6 to 8 p.m., where samples of the store’s food will be available. At Corinth, Social Suppers will be hosting an open house from 5 to 8 p.m. featuring a special selection of jams, pesto, salsa and salt-free seasoning as well as all natural body products. They will offer holiday cookies and appetizers along with a wine tasting.

A list of all the specials being offered by Village Shops merchants during the open house hours can be found here. A list of the Corinth Square merchants holiday open house specials can be found here.

The SM East band will also be playing at the Village Shops Thursday, with donations from shoppers going to help fund its upcoming trip to Florida. The band will play from 4 to 8 p.m.
