Over several years getting to know each other as the parents of girls attending Corinth Elementary School together, northeast Johnson County moms Christy Higgins, Kristi O’Keefe, Leslie Slaughter and Christie Walton discovered a shared passion for creative, classy home decor.
After working together on dozens of school PTA campaigns and Girl Scout gatherings , the foursome decided to turn that shared passion into a new project, a home decor store that opened its doors in the Old Leawood Shops at Somerset Drive and Lee Boulevard this week, Spruce Home.
“The name was just the result of the four of us throwing out some ideas,” said Slaughter. “It’s got the double meaning of ‘sprucing’ up your home, and also the symbolic spruce tree.”
The store is chock full of small furnishings, place settings, rugs, accent items and dozens of hostess gift items. Spruce worked with local firm Pickwick & Co. to design a signature scented candle, which sold out of its first batch on the first day.
“And we’re almost out of our second batch,” Slaughter said.
The moms’ daughters are now in 8th grade together at Indian Hills, and will all attend SM East next year. Slaughter said the tight community feel was important to them in the creation of the concept.
“The neighborhood, I think we needed something like this,” said Slaughter. “We’ve had a lot of people already tell us how happy they are to have us here, and we’ve had some interior designers already come in to shop for their clients.”
The store is open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Saturday.
