More than 750 American flags are greeting drivers along I-35 in Merriam this Veterans Day.

The flags, a portion of the 1,600 that have been purchased by the Community Center Foundation, are put up along the Interstate each year behind Home Depot at the Merriam Town Center to honor veterans.

Merriam city councilor Nancy Hupp said the flags are put up by a local scout troop as part of a fundraising activity for camp. The flag display is sponsored each year by Home Depot.

Hupp said the foundation has been able to purchase 200 new flags with donations and that all of the 1,600 are in good condition. The Flags 4 Freedom event places the flags in the downtown and Merriam Marketplace over Fourth of July.
