“The number one job you have as a drum major is to give a clear and consistent tempo to the band. There is tons of other stuff that’s involved, but nothing comes at the expense of that. Being a good musician, that’s one of the prerequisites of being a drum major. Being able to keep time by yourself and against other people. But also being able to conduct clearly and with sharp beats.
“Have I had missteps? Oh, yeah. The number one rule is that you always have to look like you know what you’re doing even if you don’t. I have made tons of mistakes, believe me. But I like to think people only noticed about half of them.”
