Merriam police investigating report of shots fired near I-35 and 73rd Street

Merriam police are investigating an early-morning report of shots fired at the Georgetown apartments, just north of the intersection of I-35 and 75th Street.

KSHB reports that Shawnee Mission Health, which sits near the apartment complex, had closed some of its entrances but was not on lockdown.

We’ve got an information question in with the Merriam Police Department and will update this story as soon as new information becomes available.

UPDATED 9:15 a.m.: The Merriam Police Department reports that construction workers at Shawnee Mission Health initially alerted authorities to the gunfire. When police arrived at the scene, they saw the barrel of a gun sticking out of one of the apartment windows. The shooter fired a shot after the police arrived, and police believe it may have been aimed in their vicinity. Police are still on the scene and the shooter is barricaded in an apartment.

UPDATED 9:40 a.m.: The Kansas City Star reports that police have taken two into custody in connection with the report of shots fired at the Georgetown Apartments this morning. A woman and a man surrendered to officers before 9 a.m.

UPDATED 10:30 a.m.: Police units still have a heavy presence in the area to the north of Shawnee Mission Health and have the frontage road blocked off.  Merriam police issued a statement on the situation earlier this morning:

 Merriam, KS. – On 11-05-2015 at approximately 0500 hours Merriam officers responded to a noise complaint in the 9100 block of W 73rd St. Officers did not hear any loud noises at the time of the response and left. At 06:30 A.M. officers from the Merriam Police Department responded to the 9100 block of W 73rd St. for a report of gun shots. The shots were heard by construction workers at Shawnee Mission Medical Center. As officers arrived they observed a subject point a weapon in their direction and fire from one of the apartments in the 9100 block of W. 73rd St. No officers were injured. The subject barricaded himself in the apartment. Officers have the scene contained and are working to resolve this situation. Updates will continue as the situation develops.

Access to Shawnee Mission Medical Center is limited to entering from the South off of W. 75th Street. Access from the North and from Antioch is closed off. No access to Georgetown Apartments is authorized at this time.
