The woman who was struck and killed by a falling tree Friday evening in Merriam has been identified as Kimberly Hurt.

Hurt, 29, died while working with her father and sister to take down a large tree in the backyard of the family residence where she lived. The tree came down unexpectedly and not in the direction they had planned, according to Merriam police. She died immediately after being struck in the head by a portion of the tree, police reported.

“It’s just a tragic accident,” said Captain Troy Duvanel of the Merriam Police Department. Police were called to the residence at 8016 W. 64th Street shortly after 7 p.m. Friday and were on the scene until 11:20 p.m. No further investigation is planned into what was described as a family project that got away from them.

The tree fell while the family was still working on it. A portion of a fence around the property had been removed in anticipation of the fall, but the tree went the other direction, taking out a shed and pulling down power lines. KCP&L had to be called to shut off power to the lines that were still live.

The tree was estimated at a diameter of 30 inches at the trunk.
