For the second week — and the second year — in a row, SM East’s football team made short work of a badly outmatched opponent in district play.
The 70-14 win over Wyandotte assured the Lancers a trip back to the state 6A playoffs, though they’ll have one more district game next week against northeast Johnson County rival SM North before the post season officially begins.
As they’d done the week before against Harmon, the Lancers got out to a dominating lead in the opening minutes and never looked back. Junior quarterback Luke Kaiser opened up the Lancers’ offense with a 33-yard keeper that put the Lancers on the one-yard line on their first possession. Running back Mike Bamford punched the ball in on the subsequent play for the Lancers first score of the night. The first team defense helped the cause by reeling in three first quarter interceptions. As the opening period drew to a close, the Lancers led 35-0 and were sitting on the Bulldogs goal line. They scored again on the first play of the second quarter.
With the unusual Thursday evening game, SM East will have an extra day to prepare for the Indians, who knocked off Harmon 64-14.
