While last week’s defeat at the hands of Lawrence Free State may have proved that this year’s Lancer football team isn’t unbeatable, Friday’s drubbing of Leavenworth on the road proved that they’re still the class of the Sunflower League and a force to be reckoned with.
Things looked a bit shaky for the Lancers out of the gate, however, as the Pioneers broke free for a 73-yard touchdown run on their opening drive, putting SM East in the same hole they left off against Lawrence Free State.
But SM East responded quickly with a touchdown of their own, tying the game at 7 with 9:50 left in the first half. Senior Jack Tyler gave the Lancers their second touchdown of the night with a 40-yard touchdown run .
Wyatt Edmisten punctuated the team’s offensive resurgence with a touchdown of his own to make it 21-7 and effectively put the game out of reach for the Pioneers. The Lancers kept the pressure on in the second half to bring the final score to 48-7.
The Lancers open district play next week against Harmon.
“We’re just going to keep climbing through these games, one peg at a time. We will come out stronger and better next week against Harmon, hopefully putting us closer to the state championship,” Delaney said.
