Keep truly local news in northeast Johnson County strong: Support shawneemissionpost.com

Five years ago, we launched shawneemissionpost.com because we saw a need for people in the area to have a dedicated news source about what was happening in our community.

When the site went live in June 2010, it had been months since a reporter had shown up at a city council meeting in many NEJC municipalities. At the same time, there was a lot going on with Shawnee Mission schools and education funding — some of it exciting, some of it disheartening — that simply wasn’t getting media attention.

Hey! There we are!
Hey! There we are!

Over the course of the following five years, shawneemissionpost.com grew into the most-turned-to daily news source for all of northeast Johnson County. With more than 60,000 unique visitors each month, the site has become the most vibrant voice examining local government, schools, sports and business in our community.

It’s also grown from a small side project into a real business, with more than 100 local companies and organizations supporting the site through display advertising and sponsored content each month.

But the hyperlocal space we occupy is still a fledgling industry, and publishers across the country are experimenting with new ideas to help diversify and grow their revenue bases.

Some have grown into great successes, expanding to cover new areas and providing an important service to even more readers.

Others have had to fold up shop after falling into financial difficulties and failing to find a balanced mix of revenue sources.

We’re looking to ensure shawneemissionpost.com continues down the path of the former and avoids the fate of the latter. Which is why, for the first time ever, we’re going to be holding a reader donation drive through the rest of this month.

So, here’s the pitch (and, don’t worry — you’ll be hearing it a time or two over the next couple of weeks…): If you value our truly local coverage of your community, help keep our site strong by making a donation.

And if the prospect of fresh coverage of your communities each weekday isn’t incentive enough, get this:

  • Anyone who makes a donation (and answers a quick trivia question) will be entered into a drawing for a $150 gift card to Story. Which is, like, a really amazing restaurant.
  • If you donate $25 or more, you get a versatile, reusable shawneemissionpost.com grocery bag
  • If you donate $50 or more, you get an AWESOME shawneemissionpost.com t-shirt
  • If you donate $200, you get a t-shirt, two grocery bags and a sweet PVPost hat.

To get a look at our gift items — and, I don’t know, maybe just go ahead and make your donation — check out Supportshawneemissionpost.com today.

Thanks for being our readers!
