Spotted in Northeast Johnson County: A raptor in a food coma

Reader Kim Goings sent in this photo of what I think is a juvenile Red Tailed Hawk posted up along the side of the road on Indian Lane in Mission Hills across from Kansas City Country Club Sunday morning.

“Walkers, joggers, bikers, and cars were passing by inches away and he never flinched,” Goings writes. “Most didn’t notice he was there; those who did gasped or shrieked as you might expect. I worried he was probably sick, but a friend who has volunteered in wildlife rescue informed me that raptors will gorge themselves then they’re basically dazed for 30 or 40 minutes. Food coma!”
