Former SM East student pleads guilty in DUI driving case that killed Overland Park man

EstrellaFormer SM East student Conner Estrella on Thursday pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges stemming from the August 2014 incident that killed Overland Park resident Kevin Moroney outside his home in the 8400 block of Tomahawk Road.

Estrella was driving under the influence of alcohol the night of August 7, 2014, when he lost control of his Volkswagen Passat a few minutes before midnight just two blocks from his home.

Estrella’s parents, Benjamin and Suzanne, were waiting for Estrella outside the family’s home when they heard a loud crash, according to documents in a civil suit filed by Moroney’s family. They arrived on the scene before first responders to find their son had struck Moroney, who had been standing outside his home.

Accoring to court documents, at the time of the accident, Estrella was on probation as the result of previous charges of battery and possession of drug paraphernalia. He failed a sobriety test at the scene of the accident and police later determined he had a blood alcohol level of .18. Estrella will be sentenced on the criminal charges in Johnson County District Court Sept. 17.

Moroney’s family filed a civil suit after Kevin’s death alleging that Estrella’s parents had been negligent in allowing their son to leave the house with a car given his history.

“[D]efendants Benjamin Estrella and Suzanne Estrella knew or should have know that defendant Conner Estrella was an incompetent, irresponsible and reckless driver by virtue of his past criminal record, specifically, his substance abuse history,” reads the civil suit.
