Bob’s Italian Ice will be a new addition to the food lineup in Mission. The concession will operate from April to October on the lot of the Hy-Vee grocery store on Martway.
The Mission City Council approved a Special Use Permit (SUP) that will allow the concession sales from a trailer parked at the eastern front of the store and serving from a window on the side of the trailer. The trailer will remain on the property overnight during the season.
The plan, according to city staff reports, is to have one or two employees at the concession and to have a “multi-year presence” on the site. Seating will be provided by Hy-Vee which already has patio furniture in the area.
Bob’s Italian Ice has been operating since 2008, according to a presentation at the plan commission last month. The Italian Ice was described as similar to a sorbet, served in a cup and is dairy-free, but nothing like a snow cone or shaved ice.
The Mission Hy-Vee has had a number of additions since it was built in 1992, including permission for a garden and flowering plant sales on the lot. The out lots were developed for the gas station and fast food in 2003 and 2001.
