One of the newest additions to Mission’s downtown along Johnson Drive will be a music store that will give lessons as well as sell instruments and records.
Brothers Music plans to open around Oct. 1 in the building that previously housed a laundry and dry cleaners. Bothers Cole and Kyle Maggart are currently renovating the inside of the space and plan to keep the distinctive art deco touch on the exterior that marks the corner.
Kyle Maggart said the brothers looked for a long time for a retail space, wanting to be somewhere south of downtown Kansas City. They had been looking in Waldo. But when they saw the building on Johnson Drive, “we fell in love with it,” Kyle said.
Cole has been a guitar teacher and music store manager in Lee’s Summit for 15 years. Kyle has been in the used record business for four years and has a booth in a vintage store in Olathe. Kyle will handle the retail and Cole will manage the lessons, which will include multiple teachers.
The lessons will focus on drums, guitar and bass in six lesson rooms. The store will buy and sell used guitars and drums with some new pieces available. It will also sell music accessories and vinyl records and compact discs. Kyle says it will be a “full service” music store. He says there is a new popularity in vinyl with new releases available for the first time in years.
“I think people miss (the feel) that vinyl can provide,” he says.
