Lots of work in progress, but timeline still murky for start of GigaPower, Fiber service in NEJC

It seems as though nearly every neighborhood in northeast Johnson County has had a crew working to install infrastructure for AT&T’s GigaPower or Google’s Fiber high speed internet services this summer.

But as for when area residents can actually expect to be able to get the services hooked up in their homes? Mum’s the word from both companies for now.

Google began hooking up homes in Roeland Park, Westwood, Westwood Hills and Mission Woods earlier this year. But the company has not opened up sign up periods for Fiberhoods in Prairie Village, Fairway and Mission.

Google spokeswoman Laruen Barriere said the company was currently focused on the eastern part of Olathe, where they had just opened sign ups. They have also reopened sign ups in Kansas City, Kan., and Kansas City, Mo.

“Though we don’t have a timing update to share with Johnson County today, I’ll let you know as soon as we do,” she said.

It was a similar story with AT&T GigaPower. Neighborhoods around the Village Shops and elsewhere have seen Fiber crews posting signs about work in progress for the past several days, but the company said it doesn’t have any information to release on the timing for actual service.

“We’re moving quickly to deliver on our plans to provide U-verse with AT&T GigaPower to customers in parts of northeastern Johnson County,” said Chris Lester, Senior Public Relations Manager for the Greater Midwest Region. “We’re set to release additional details in the near future.”
