Another corner near the Merriam IKEA store is scheduled to be redeveloped.
The Merriam City Council this week gave approval to a preliminary development plan for a new building that will occupy the corner parcel at Johnson Drive and Slater. It will be the site of a new building with nearly 7,000 square feet of retail that will include a 5,258 square foot AT&T store and a 1,674 square foot Subway.
The building that will be demolished to make way for the new development now houses a Subway and a 7-11 convenience store. The new building also will replace the gas station that is part of the current parcel.
The new lineup is expected to reduce traffic to the corner and the entrances off Slater will be closed, according to the staff report. The new building have the AT&T portion closer to Johnson Drive and the Subway to the south.
The entrances will be on the west side of the building facing parking. An entrance from Johnson Drive will be maintained and the new building will have access to a private drive to the south that connects Slater and IKEA Way. The traffic flow will be improved, according to the traffic analysis, as a result of closing the direct Slater Street access points.
The development is expected to be open in 2016.
