Roeland Park police assist in response to reported shooting on I-35


Roeland Park police were among the law enforcement agents responding to a reported shooting on I-35 just east of the Roe Avenue interchange that had the southbound lanes of the metro area thoroughfare closed Thursday morning.

Early reports from law enforcement officials suggest that the suspects involved in the shooting were fleeing officers after a robbery in Kansas City, Mo. U.S. Marshals are said to have been involved in the chase.

After 10 a.m. Thursday, more than a dozen law enforcement vehicles were on the scene with crime scene tape spread across the southbound lanes of the highway, several civilian vehicles, including a black Jeep Cherokee, were spread across the highway at odd angles. Officers from the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s office and the Kansas Highway Patrol were stationed at the top of 18th Street Expressway and appeared to be looking for suspects on the ground below.

Roeland Park police were directing traffic on the south side of the I-35/Roe interchange. The site of the shooting is in Kansas City, Kan.

UPDATED 11:06 a.m.: Police officers now say that the incident that led to the shooting was possibly a robbery in the River Market area of Kansas City, Mo. One suspect is dead in the shooting.

UPDATED 1:11 p.m. The latest reports from law enforcement suggest the people involved in the chase were wanted on previous warrants. One of the suspects jumped out of a vehicle at the River Market. It is not confirmed that there was a robbery today.
