Saturday’s VillageFest celebration in Prairie Village started with the awarding of the annual Community Spirit Awards, honoring people whose contributions and service make Prairie Village a better place to live.
This year’s winners were:
Tom O’Brien, Citizen Community Spirit Award
O’Brien, who has long been involved in environmental effort in the city, including the organization of the Prairie Village Earth Fair, earned the Citizen Community Spirit Award in part for his efforts to lead the community garden project that is now thriving in Harmon Park. Harmon wasn’t present to pick up his honor…but here’s a shot of the gardens:
Bill Spangler, Business Community Spirit Award
This year’s Business Community Spirit Award went to Bill Spangler, who has been operating Spangler’s at the Village Shops since 1954. The shopping center’s longest-tenured tenant, Spangler still works at the store at age 92.
Dale Warman, Lifetime Community Spirit Award
This year’s Lifetime Community Spirit Award went to Dale Warman, who has been active in city activities for years. Warman served as a member of the Prairie Village City Council from 2009 to 2014, and has been a part of the city’s Citizen’s Police Academy. He’s also actively involved in the Northeast Johnson County Chamber of Commerce.
Congratulations to this year’s winners — and thanks for making northeast Johnson County a better place.
