The Prairie Village Municipal Grounds will turn into the most festive Fourth of July celebration in northeast Johnson County Saturday.
Back for its 19th year, VillageFest has become a draw for families across northeast Johnson County, with thousands of parents and kids swarming Harmon Park and the area outside city hall. Attractions include a petting zoo, pony rides, craft booths, face painting, train rides, a climbing wall and live music, among others.
This year, the organizing committee has added a new feature, a play area with fake snow that will include appearances by characters from Disney’s “Frozen.”
There will be one notable change from years past, however. Starting in 1999 — just the event’s third year — Prairie Village’s longtime mayor Ron Shaffer filled the role of emcee for the Patriotic Ceremony that kicks things off at 8:30 a.m. at the Harmon Park Pavilion. This year, Shaffer’s successor Laura Wassmer will be running the show for the first time.
