One of the two men killed in a double homicide in north Overland Park Tuesday was a former SM North student who had withdrawn from the Shawnee Mission district in April.
Velik L. Henderson, 18, was found dead at the scene of the crime when police arrived in response to reports of a disturbance. Police had his family’s apartment, at the far end of the cul-de-sac on 61st Street that directly abuts Crestview Elementary School, blocked off with police tape for much of the day Wednesday.
Shawnee Mission School District spokeswoman Leigh Anne Neal confirmed that Henderson had been enrolled at SM North, just a couple of blocks from Henderson’s home, as recently as the past school year. But records show he withdrew from the district April 1 without taking a degree. A report from the Kansas City Star says Henderson graduated from Raytown High School this spring.
The second victim was Trevon D. Anderson, who resided in Kansas City, Kan. Anderson, 19, died at an area hospital after being taken from the scene with life threatening injuries.
Overland Park police say they are continuing to investigate the incident.
