Game On for Kansas Schools, the pro-education funding group started by a group of Belinder Elementary parents, is among the organizations applauding the Shawnee County three-judge panel’s ruling Friday that the block grant bill passed by the legislature this spring does not address the adequacy and equity issues with school funding in the state.
Game On’s Judith Deedy issued the following statement for the organization:
The latest Gannon decision confirms what we all already knew, which is that in enacting the block grant, the legislature did not fix inadequate funding of our schools. This is not an example of an activist court, but of a court attempting to hold a reluctant legislature to its constitutional obligation to fund schools appropriately. We understand that the current decision has already been appealed to the Kansas Supreme Court and hope that a decision will be issued from that court before our children finish yet another school year. We are also particularly disappointed in the reactions of many of our legislative leaders and our governor to the Gannon decision and hope that Kansans will remember that these leaders are expressing anger about being required to meet the educational needs of our children.
