A Prairie Village-based specialty shoe store is celebrating a decade in business — and some impressive national recognition.
The company that is now the Foot Spot opened its first location at 131st Street and State Line Road in June 2005 as a franchise of Foot Solutions. A year later, owner Ryan Richard expanded with a Corinth Square location that has become the headquarters from which Richard manages the three-store chain. Last year, he bought out the franchise agreement with Foot Solutions and renamed the business the Foot Spot, making it a totally independent operation.
“Starting out with the Foot Solutions franchise, we had the opportunity to start a business and grow it and learn about pedorthics and comfort shoes,” Richard said. “Now we’re a totally family-owned and operated business.”
Richard said Prairie Village has been a perfect home base for the operation, with strong support from local shoppers.
“It’s a neat community and a unique community,” he said. “We knew that if we could do good job of taking care of the people, word-of-mouth would spread and friends and family would support us as well. That’s what happened.”
The company’s attention to customer service has earned it not only a loyal local following, but national recognition as well. This past month, the company was honored as one of the top 10 shoe stores for customer service with a Gold Medal Service Award from Footwear Insight magazine. The award is based on the experience of mystery shoppers who visited independently owned stores across the country.
““Providing exceptional customer service is something we do everyday, so it’s gratifying to be ‘discovered’ by the mystery shoppers,” Richard said. “For us, there’s simply no other way to do business.”
Foot Spot is recognizing the 10-year anniversary, which falls this Saturday, with a sale that started Wednesday.
