SM East junior Andy Spencer has found himself near the top of the final leaderboard in golf tournaments all year long. On Tuesday, he finished first when it mattered most.
Spencer shot a two-under-par 69 at Carey Golf Course for the Kansa 6A tournament in the first 18 holes, tied for the lead with Josh Pederson of Blue Valley North. But Spencer birdied the first hole of the tiebreaker to win the 6A individual title. He is the first Lancer to win the individual title outright since 2001. SM East student Joe Lynch won a share of the individual title in 2008.
As a team, the Lancers weren’t able to defend their state title, however. SM East finished third behind Washburn Rural and Blue Valley North. Lancer golfers Worth Blackman and Corey Knabe each shot 76 on the day. Brady Clark shot 77.
