Lancers finish 2nd at girls state swim and dive meet, ending 5-year title streak


For the first time since 2009, SM East girls swim and dive team isn’t reigning as Kansas 6A champion.

Lawrence Free State edged SM East’s girls team at the Capitol Federal Natatorium in Topeka Saturday, ending the Lancers’ five year streak of championships.

While the girls had to settle for second place as a team, the Lancers fared well in a number of individual events. University of Nebraska-bound Rilye Fries took first in both the 200 yard individual medley and the 100 yard butterfly. Crissie Blomquist won the 500 yard freestyle.

Other medal-earning finishes for the Lancers included: The team of Fries, Sarah Allegri, Bonnie Longan and Mary Booton taking second in the 200 yard medley relay; Blomquist took second in the 200 yard freestyle; Allegri took third in the 50 yard freestyle; Izzy Smith took third in the 500 yard freestyle; the team of Allegri, Fries, Blomquist and Hannah McPhail took second in the 200 yard freestyle relay; Allegri took second and Longan took third in the 100 yard backstroke; Booton took third in the 100 yard backstroke; and the team of Blomquist, McPhail, Linscott and Longan took second in the 400 yard freestyle relay.

Free State, which went undefeated through the season, finished the day with 424 team points to SM East’s 399. Olathe Northwest finished a distant third at 211.
