SM East’s theatre department seems to have a knack for producing award winning leading actors and actresses.

Graduated senior Austin Dalgleish was named Outstanding Actor at the 2015 Blue Star Awards, honoring the best performances and productions from high school musicals throughout the Kansas City area, for his performance as Seymour in Little Shop of Horrors this February.

It’s the third year in a row an SM East student has taken the Outstanding Actor or Actress title. Last year, Maddie Roberts won Outstanding Actress for her portrayal of Fiona in Shrek!…The Muscial. And Lily Kaufmann won in 2013 for her role in the Drowsy Chaperone.

“It speaks very highly of the work ethic and motivation of these kids — they feed off the success of their peers and really want to do whatever it takes to maintain the high quality that audiences have come to expect from East theatre,” said SM East theatre director Brian Cappello.

Dalgleish is headed to the University of Southern California, where he says he intends to study management and directing of theatre productions.

“The best part of working with Austin was seeing him grow into a talented performer—watching him discover his talents and nurture them,” Cappello said. “He worked hard to achieve this honor.”
