CFD2 gives award to man who helped control apartment fire. Consolidated Fire District No. 2 this week gave its Don Harper Meritorious Service Award to Alex Hartman, a Kansas City, Mo., resident who was visiting a Mission friend’s apartment at The Retreat complex, 5009 Lamar Ave., when fire broke out in a nearby unit. He went around the complex alerting residents and then used two fire extinguishers to help control the blaze.
Lancers looking for fifth straight girls swim and dive state title. SM East’s girls swim and dive team may have dropped its first Sunflower League title in a decade earlier this year, but the team still has the chance to add its fifth consecutive state title as competition gets under way in Topeka today. Hillcrest’s Fourth Friday Concert series kicks off tenth year tonight. Hillcrest Covenant Church in Prairie Village will open its tenth Fourth Friday Concert series tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Franklin Park. The opening night performer is the Moon City Big Band. Food will be provided as well, and patrons are encouraged to bring lawn chairs. The event will wrap by 8:30 p.m.
Pools open this weekend across NEJC. A chill may still linger but pools are opening this weekend. The Mission pool opens at noon Saturday, rain or shine. “If you’re interested bring your insulated wet suit because the water is cold,” City Adminstrator Laura Smith joked. “But we will have, I’m sure, lots of blue-lipped children anxious to take their first dip in the swimming pool.” Roeland Park opens at noon today with a free day for city residents. Opening day in Merriam is Sunday at noon with free swim, Prairie Village opens at 6 p.m. Saturday. Fairway’s renovated pool opens at 11 a.m. Saturday.
Prairie Village police warn about auto burglaries. Prairie Village police sent out a warning to residents Thursday that the city has experienced a rash of auto burglaries. Many of the cars hit in the crimes were unlocked, so officials are urging residents to be diligent about locking their cars.
